Penang Nyonya’s Spring Rolls

Spring Rolls or “Popiah” in Malay, is usually fried to perfection and is a great delicacy. Spring Rolls at Penang Nyonya is no difference — it is crispy, delicious and served hot albeit a little oily.

Penang Nyonya’s Nyonya Nasi Lemak

Chicken Beef Set consists of a plate of rice (selection of either Briyani or Lemak), chicken or beef dishes, appetizer, dessert and a drink. Surprisingly, my selection of Lemak rice ends up the same as what my partner ordered — Nyonya Nasi Lemak and Penang Chicken Curry. I have to say the Nyonya Nasi Lemak is a disappointment. There is really nothing to shout about.

Penang Nyonya’s Penang Curry Chicken

Penang Curry Chicken is quite mediocre. It’s oily, the curry does not have enough santan and flavor and doesn’t seem to look appetizing.

Penang Nyonya’s Cendol

Cendol is perhaps the worst of the worst item on the menu. First off, the cendol does not come with red beans. This is the first time I eat cendol without red beans and I must say it is not very pleasing at all. There are tonnes of places that serve better cendol than here. In fact, all of them have better cendol and it is quite a disappointment to know Klang has a place which serves Penang Nyonya food has one of the worst cendol in the country, knowing that Klang also has one of the best cendols in Malaysia.

Overall, Penang Nyonya would be the last place on earth we would go to, ever. There are plenty of other restaurants in AEON Bukit Tinggi which serve better food at a better fare, why bother coming here?

Gurney Drive’s Chee Cheong Fun

Gurney’s Drive Chee Cheong Fun fairs so much better than the flamboyant restaurant in The Gardens with the same name. From RM 2 for a small plate to RM 4 for large, you can eat until you vomit but you don’t have to pay RM 8 for a plate. What’s more important is a hawker food should be eaten in a hawker centre, if the patrons want to eat in an air-conditioned place, there is something called "take-away".

Gurney Drive’s Muar Chee

Muar Chee (Stall #55) serves Muar Chee and they are just so tasty. Just like many other stalls, there are a few options to choose from — small and large with the difference at only 50 cents.

Gurney Drive’s Fried Chicken

M Tucky Fried Chicken (Stall #100) serves delicious Fried Chicken, Fried Sotong, Fried Chicken Skin, Fried Sausage and more. They are incredibly crispy and the stall usually has really long queues. Even though the food tastes quite good, they are also incredibly unhealthy.

Gurney Drive’s Ais Kacang

There is however, nothing to shout about for the Ais Kacang (Stall #78). It is quite bland and the ingredients is quite minimal and even though there are usually a long queue at this stall, don’t be fooled and intimidated by the queue.

Gurney Drive’s Cendol

The Cendol is quite mediocre but it is definitely better than the Ais Kacang. Nevertheless, nothing beats the cendol in Cendol Klang. That’s for sure.

Gurney Drive’s Longan Tau Fa

Longan Tau Fa (Stall #76) is quite refreshing and unique as it is a cup of jelly and longan and is a better choice as dessert after a hearty meal at Gurney Drive.

Overall, Gurney Drive hawker stalls have changed so much over the decade. While the place is always filled with patrons, the number of eaters has gone up while the quality of the food has gone down. There are always other hawker stalls in Penang.

Mee Jawa’s Mee Jawa

Mee Jawa as its name suggested, is famous with its Javanese noodles, or Mee Jawa in Bahasa Malaysia. The plate of Mee Jawa is huge as you can see from the picture comparative with the sppon and chopstick. Its taste is somehow rather mediocre and besides its humongous plate, there’s nothing really to shout about. Still, it’s better than Mee Jawa at Oldtown.

Mee Jawa’s Curry Laksa

Curry Laksa, on the other hand, is pleasant to eat, although I have to say its incredible hard to find one that’s as good as you can get from Penang.

Maybe Mee Jawa should be neglected, not just because of its location but of its food.

Little Penang Kafe’s Chicken Nasi Lemak

Just like the restaurant’s name, little can be said of the Nasi Lemak. Sri Nirwana in Bangsar still serves the best nasi lemak so far.

Little Penang Kafe’s Assam Laksa

The Assam Laksa, however, is full of flavor — it’s sour and has a generous amount of fish meat.

Little Penang Kafe’s Sugar Cane and Cincau

The Sugar Cane drink barely tastes like those Sugar Cane drinks from the hawkers stalls. While the Cincau drink is ordinary, nothing too special about it.

Sin Ming Hong’s Special Coffee (Hot)

Sin Ming Hong’s Special Coffee (Cold)

Special Coffee looks special and different from the ordinary coffee in kopitiam. However, I feel it tastes almost the same like the ordinary coffee and fail to taste any difference in it.

Sin Ming Hong’s Babyshake

Babyshake is nevertheless a special drink which consists of milk tea and a small amount of coffee powder. There is a strong flowery taste in it as well.

Sin Ming Hong’s Egg on Toast

Egg on Toast consists of half-boiled eggs and toasts except the eggs are on the toast as the name has suggested. Special but I still prefer to eat them separately. What about you?

Sai Toh Lim’s Soup Kuey Teow

Soup Kuey Teow is no doubt savory and good to every bit.

Sai Toh Lim’s Dry Kuey Teow

Dry Kuey Teow is slightly less appetizing even though the chili is quite good.

Sai Toh Lim’s Hokkien Prawn Noodles

Hokkien Prawn Noodles is pretty tasty with Penang flavors. You don’t get these too often in Kuala Lumpur these days. So, it’s good and spicy!

Overall, the food in Restoran Sai Toh Lim is quite good and dirt cheap with RM 2.50 for small bowl and RM 3.00 for big bowl, you won’t find these price in KL.

This is the worst Chee Cheong Fun I ever had — plain and blatant, it doesn’t even has any Yong Tao Foo and it’s priced at RM 8.00.

Duck Drumstick Noodle

Meanwhile, the Duck Drumstick Noodle (??) is up to par with price like RM 15.00, it is at least worth the money.
