Char Kuey Teow (Fried Kuey Teow) @ Lorong Selamat, Penang

Lorong Selamat Char Kuey Teow or Fried Kuey Teow has been famous since early 2000. Now, it is sheltered inside a restaurant named Kafe Heng Huat and not the one outside a few shops away in the street. However, many bloggers and food lovers alike have commented that the owners are not very friendly. It is indeed the truth — the owner told us to wait at least two hours when we were ordering, it’s like they are now so rich, they don’t need our business anymore. We ended up waiting for nearly one hour instead of the two hours she earlier mentioned. Rude and arrogant is not the way to service the customers. Furthermore, since their debut on 8TV’s Ho Chak, the price is now ridiculously high, starting from RM 6.50 to RM 9.00 for a bigger plate.

Even though, the plate of Char Kuey Teow has three big prawns, the eggs seems to be a little bit soggy. The plate of Fried Kuey Teow is quite small, where the bigger plate will cost RM 9.00 instead of RM 7.00.

Kafe Heng Huat also has Ice Kacang. The famous Ice Kacang is the one a few shop lots away on the street. The owner of Kafe Heng Huat allows you to take away food from outside except Char Kuey Teow and Ice Kacang, because if you want these, you need to buy from them.

My verdict? These are not the best Char Kuey Teow in town. I have tried many better ones and the big prawns are not worth it. Moreover, the attitude of the business owners are way too unfriendly they should consider closing down their business and eat wind instead.

Price

  • Char Kuey Teow (Without eggs) – RM 6.50
  • Char Kuey Teow (Regular) – RM 7.00
  • Char Kuey Teow (Big) – RM 9.00

Address

This is the most screw-up restaraunt in Penang…

I went to this kopi tiam with my family during the 3rd day of CNY. We plan this visit a month before our trip just hope that we’ll get the real tast of Penang Char Kuey Teow ( as it was so famous ) but it turn up to a bad experience…

We waited for about 10 mins and get the seat just beside the char kuey teow and order was make. The weather very hot in that afternoon and we are lucky to move to a better table just a while. I than inform the char kuey teow women that we have move to other table with a very friendly tone, and the story began……

Just can’t believe the reponse from the char kuey teow old women with a sharp and high tone : wa char ka ai seow (in Hockkian mean I’m so mad in frying ), bo eng hor lu ua lai ua ghi (can’t entertain you keep on changing table ) !!

And the men beside her ( believe is her husband ) join in, also with bad tone : Lu kaki cher chi peng tan, liao kaki gear ( you seat back the same table and wait here, bring yourself when ready )… and the old women again continue with high tone : ai ko cher toh tui ( if you want, seat back the same table ), bo ko men chiak ( or else don’t eat )….!! What kind of attitue as a service hawker ? is this Make in Penang ?

My temple get hot immediately as I can’t stand this type of response, but I control myself not to argue with this type of people, and just tell my family move to the next kopi tiam, and the moment we walk out, she said something again : wa e-ne par pai ( so action ), mai chiak ma mai chiak loh ( I don’t bother… ) !!

My advise to anybody that plan to try this shop ( Heng Huat Cafe Char Kuey Teow ), get ready to accept this type of treatment while you spend your money…or you need some luck luck to hope that this old women is in a good mood…but for me, for sure my answer is never as I believe I can get the same quality ( yet to know how good this char kuey teow …) with good service in other place, and to vlue the money I spend. Good luck Penang ……..

Thanks for the comments, KL Visitor! I’m glad I saw ur comments before I go there!
My mom and I love to go to penang to explore the delicious local food there… Then my mom told me about this char koay teow in penang and I googled it and found ur comments…
Of course the taste of the food is important, but so is the service!
I will NEVER go to such place for a bad and no manners service which I have to PAY!
Its not like we’re asking it for free… Gosh, they really need to get lost from f&b service…
Once again, thanks KL Visitor! :)

You ask for it.The locals never eat there.Only time is when they take their visitors round there.
What is so great about it?It’s all because of animal fat and ajinomoto.
Just examine the ingredients and you will understand what I mean but you can’t,then continues to be a sucker.

Further, they can go to the casino in the night with your generous support.

I would say to all ‘BOYCOTT THIS PLACE’!!! Life still goes on even if you don’t eat their Char Koay Teow. There are lots of places in Penang that serve very good char koay teow. If more people boycott this place, then they won’t be so ARROGANT. Teach them a lesson. They were so arrogant and told off an old lady the other day. I think it is very rude of them to do that. One way to fix them is to get the authorities to check on that place for illegal piping in the shop or maybe check on their cleanliness. Shut the place and put them out of business.

Yeah, boycott! Read today’s Star – 23 September 2010. Reader’s letter titled “Boycott arrogant hawker”.
